FAP Removal: An Illegal Procedure

You can often find ads offering to remove the DPF and EGR valve from your car. However, it's best to be wary of anyone trying to sell you this solution, as it can lead to significant consequences.

Remove the particulate filter (FAP)

Many people adopt the practice of removing the DPF to minimize problems with diesel-powered vehicles. Some mechanics propose this solution to permanently eliminate any problems the DPF may present throughout its life cycle. However, this procedure is illegal and carries heavy penalties under specific laws, exposing the driver to significant administrative fines and criminal charges if violated. Let's see why some workshops recommend removing the particulate filter.

Before providing a comprehensive explanation, it's important to understand why the filter is installed and how it works exactly. The DPF is a mandatory feature on all newer diesel vehicles and serves to reduce PM10 emissions into the atmosphere. PM10, in fact, is the acronym for fine particles with a diameter equal to or less than 10 microns (thousandths of a millimeter). Particulate Matter 10 consists primarily of dust, fumes, liquids, and various particulates that are highly polluting to the environment and human health. Indeed, these substances contained in diesel car emissions can be extremely fine, and some can grow to such a size that they easily reach the alveoli that form the lungs. They are indicated by the acronym PM2.5 and are particularly dangerous.

The FAP: how it works

The particulate filter is mounted on the car's exhaust system and filters the gases produced by the engine. It captures and temporarily stores the particulate matter resulting from diesel combustion. Then, at periodic intervals, through a completely automatic procedure, the DPF activates the self-regeneration process, which allows small amounts of diesel fuel to be introduced into the filter to burn the accumulated particulate matter, thus converting it into CO2. The particulate filter regeneration process begins while the vehicle is moving, and when this operation is activated, it is advisable to maintain a steady speed to allow the DPF to reach the ideal temperature to adequately burn the trapped particles.

However, in some cases, such as during short city trips, self-regeneration cannot occur properly due to a lack of time to heat the filter to the approximately 400/650 degrees Celsius required, depending on the model, to complete the process. When this occurs, the DPF will become clogged, resulting in a decline in engine performance and a corresponding increase in fuel consumption for the same distance traveled. Furthermore, when the number of failed regeneration attempts becomes excessive, the engine oil level will drop, requiring more frequent oil changes. Precisely because of these inconveniences, caused primarily by poor DPF management by drivers, many people believe that the solution to these problems is to remove the particulate filter. However, what is often overlooked is that this solution brings with it various consequences that are detrimental to the environment, to the car owner, and to the vehicle itself. Furthermore, these consequences will all be quite serious and therefore should not be underestimated.

Removing the particulate filter: what are the consequences?

Removing the DPF is harmful and illegal, and this practice can lead to serious consequences. First and foremost, it is harmful to the already delicately unstable environment, as removing the particulate filter allows the unrestrained release of PM10 and PM2.5. The consequences of these toxic fumes are dangerous to everyone's health, including the car owner and the mechanic performing this procedure, as PM2.5 particles can, as mentioned, reach the lungs and cause serious damage. Furthermore, anyone removing the DPF from their car must consider other personal consequences that can be quite serious. First and foremost, there is a fine ranging from €422 to €1,697. This penalty will include the confiscation of the tampered vehicle's registration document and the obligation to replace the particulate filter in the car's exhaust system. It is also worth remembering that Article 78 of the Highway Code expressly prohibits modifying the characteristics with which a vehicle is manufactured by the manufacturer.

Therefore, removing the DPF is illegal, just like removing the EGR valve and any other modification to the vehicle's mechanics or electronics. Furthermore, law enforcement agencies are equipped with equipment capable of analyzing car exhaust fumes, allowing them to adequately detect and challenge any tampering found. Finally, the worst consequence for drivers of removing the particulate filter, considering that it increases vehicle pollution, is the risk of criminal charges. This offense, as defined by the Italian Criminal Code, carries a severe penalty, carrying a prison sentence of 2 to 6 years, coupled with a fine ranging from €10,000 to €100,000.

In conclusion, we can state that removing the particulate filter (DPF) is primarily harmful to the environment and human health. As we have seen, the very fine particulate matter produced by the combustion of diesel fuel in diesel cars, if not adequately filtered by the DPF, can easily reach the deepest passages of our respiratory system, causing many long-term illnesses, even serious ones. Furthermore, there is a risk of incurring very heavy penalties, which can be imposed on the driver of a car from which this filter has been removed, as well as on the mechanic who performed its removal. These penalties can include very hefty fines, criminal charges, and prison sentences of varying lengths. For these reasons, it is essential to leave the particulate filter installed in the car and take care of it, so as to prevent any malfunctions.
