Radiator leak problems: be careful!
Car radiator leak stopper is a product that, mixed with antifreeze, is used in the cooling and/or heating system to repair small leaks and tiny holes.
What is radiator leak sealant?
You need to pay close attention to the type of product you purchase and check whether the leak stopper contains natural fibers, a characteristic that would make it more or less compatible with all antifreezes and also with all the materials present in the same system, such as plastic, rubber, brass, aluminum, etc. These are always disposable products.
When is leak stopper really useful?
Leak stopper can be really useful when you need to repair small coolant leaks, in fact it is used to locate the small leak.
It's also considered a leak preventer, not just a radiator sealant. There are also special preparations for sealing circuits, plugging cracks and, of course, small holes in radiators. Therefore, it's useful for repairing the very small leaks that can be detected by the color of the fluid coming out of the radiator.
How to Fix a Head Gasket Leak
Leak stopper is also used for this problem, although leak stopper tends to create blockages.
That said, keeping a leak stopper in your car is definitely recommended to avoid finding yourself in the circumstances described. While some people use bran for emergency repairs, bran should obviously be kept in your car too!
Why be careful when using leak stoppers?
First of all, the product must be of excellent quality and it is also important to know that there are specific leak stoppers, for example for damage to the engine block/cylinder head, which are effective until the thermal cycle is completed. Therefore, once the leak is repaired, they stop working and if the leak then recurs, which in fact is unlikely, the treatment must be repeated.
There are also leak stoppers that, once inserted into the tank when the engine is hot, remain in circulation and continue to work. Therefore, if a new leak were to occur, they are able to close the leak again. Furthermore, they do not present any type of contraindications because they are not at risk of clogging; in fact, they also act as a lubricant and descaler.
When does leak stopper become ineffective?
The leak stop becomes ineffective when the connecting sleeves are damaged, but in this case replacement is quick and inexpensive.
Can you work on the leak stopper even if the radiator is old?
Repairs to an old radiator are much more difficult and complex if you intend to use a leak stopper, because there is often heavy encrustations that prevent the leak stopper from working.
You must therefore consider the age of the radiator, whether it has been corroded, whether it may have taken a knock, and also the material it is made of, for example, plastic or aluminum. In fact, few old radiators can truly be repaired.
When is it time to replace your car radiator?
After a few years, you should consider replacing the radiator with a new one. It's hard to imagine a radiator that's twenty years old, yet there are certainly cases.
It's clear that a radiator this old loses all its performance and will also become infested with limescale. To keep it running, proper maintenance is necessary, but even this can't be prolonged over many years. Therefore, radiator replacement must be functional and timely, given the wear and tear.
Another way to reduce risks, especially in older cars, is to regularly check the radiator to ensure proper protection for the system's long-term performance. Remember that dirt, rust, and dust can clog essential radiator parts.
